Bańska Niżna could have been the second Baku – in 1980 it was intensively drilled for oil deposits. Although no oil was found, the history of the village was changed forever.  It turned out that Bańska Niżna has thermal waters. And so it became the first village in Poland to be fully heated by thermal energy, and a home to thermal baths where skiers can regenerate after a whole day spent on the slope.

Bańska Niżna is located at the very heart of the skiing region of Poland, only 18 km from Zakopane and 2 km from Szaflary, where the closest skiing station can be found. The population of the village is only about 1000 inhabitants, but tradition, folklore and local dialect play a big role in the lives of the inhabitants. They organise annual fairs and events, which celebrate regional tradition and cuisine. The last Saturday of the carnival is when the Regional Cuisine Contest is held, while January is when you can take part in the Gazdowska Parade.

The thermal waters in Bańska Niżna have a relatively high temperature for Poland  -  86 °C. In 2008 the outdoor and indoor swimming pools complex of total acreage of 970 m². The pools are filled with mineralised water from 3040 m underground, its temperature ranging from 30 to 38° Celsius , which is used in balneotherapy, a field of medicine which focuses on underground water and peat treatments. The thermal baths in Bańska Niżna have many healing properties, they soothe the muscles and the joints, do wonders for the skin, as well as improve overall well-being. The tourists will have several kinds of water and air massages to choose from.
