Beskids in Poland

Beskids in Poland

"Someone once said that the Tatras are gothic, while  the Beskids –  baroque.  Baroque is perceptible not only in the shape of the Beskids, but all over these lands. From wherever you look, it flows in soft – wavy – mild lines, flows, one would think, to the edge of the world".

When setting out for a hike in the Beskids, many tourists carry these words of the Silesian writer Gustaw Morcinek with them. However,  once they plunge into the beauty of the Silesian  Beskid landscape, few remember to ponder on architectural styles, as the charm of those trails simply makes one forget oneself. First they take the tourists through traditional mountain villages, only to lead them up to the characteristic domed peaks and offer breath-taking panoramas.

The Beskids are the youngest of Polish mountains. They belong to the Karpaty Zewnętrzne range and stretch over 600 km. The highest peak is Babia Góra (1725 m n.p.m.), called the Queen of Beskid, which is also the highest peak in Poland outside the Tatras. The most popular towns in the region are Wisła, Ustroń, Szczyrk and Koniaków.

Those who value comfort and beautiful views without the price of sweat and aching legs, can start their sightseeing with a chairlift ride up the Czantoria Mountain, the bottom station of which is located in Ustroń. While the more ambitious tourists can brave the Kazimierz Sosnowski Main Beskidzki Trail, which is 519 km long in total and constitutes the longest tourist trail in Polish mountains. It has been especially designed to show off the uniqueness and the variety of the landscape and the natural life of Beskid. Apart from interesting geological formations called flysch, the hikers can feast their eyes on picturesque mountain streams, famous for their trout and bullhead or taste local mineral waters, which are one of the riches of the region. They are especially abundant in Beskid Sądecki witch is full of SPA resorts such as Krynica, Muszyna or Piwniczna Zdrój. The Beskids even have their own brine deposits. The newly built graduation towers in a village of Dębowiec attract increasing amounts of tourists, who come here to enjoy the health benefits of the local brine which has one of the highest iodine and bromine content in Europe.

The baroque beauty of the landscape, the tranquillity of the SPA resorts and the excellent hiking trails are only several of points on the long list of reasons for visiting the Beskids.
